Software Development in Chicago, Built for Illinois Rules

Chicago companies move freight, make things, feed people and trade risk, and two Illinois laws reach directly into how their software handles biometrics and hiring. We build custom applications, mobile apps and AI features for Chicago firms, with the state's biometric privacy and AI hiring requirements designed in rather than discovered at launch.

Why does a Chicago software project need Illinois-specific planning?

Because two Illinois laws reach into ordinary features. BIPA governs the fingerprints, face geometry scans and voiceprints a business collects, and carries a private right of action. The Illinois Human Rights Act now covers AI used in hiring and other employment decisions. A face login or a resume screener can trigger either, so we plan for both during design.

Biometric features under BIPA

Face unlock, fingerprint time clocks, voice authentication and identity checks that match a selfie to a document all touch biometric identifiers as the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act defines them. Before collecting one, a private entity must tell the person in writing that it is being collected, state the specific purpose and how long it will be kept, and receive a written release. It must also publish a retention schedule and destroy the data on time.

When biometric features are in scope, we build those steps into the product: the notice and release captured and stored before any scan, retention dates attached to each record, and deletion that actually runs. Often the better answer is to let the phone's own biometric unlock gate access so the app never receives the biometric data at all. Your counsel signs off on the wording; we build the software to do what the policy says.

AI in hiring and HR decisions

Public Act 103-0804 amended the Illinois Human Rights Act, effective 1 January 2026. It makes it a civil rights violation for an employer to use AI that has the effect of discriminating against protected classes in recruiting, hiring, promotion, discipline, discharge or other terms of employment, or to use zip codes as a proxy for protected classes, and it requires employers to give notice when they use AI for those purposes.

If you want AI to screen applicants, rank internal candidates or flag performance issues, we scope the checks in the design phase: a notice step, a record of what the model was given and what it returned, a person making the final call, and an evaluation set drawn from your own material that we re-run on every change.

Freight, rail and the supply chain

According to the CREATE program, one of every four U.S. freight trains passes through Chicago. Shippers, brokers, intermodal operators and warehouses here handle a constant flow of rate confirmations, delivery receipts and invoices from other companies. Our logistics page explains how we automate that document and exception work around the systems already in place.

Manufacturing, food and fintech

World Business Chicago, the city's public-private economic development agency, concentrates on life science and healthcare, food and agtech, transportation and logistics, manufacturing, and fintech. For manufacturers and food producers, that usually means connecting the plant floor, quality records and order systems; see manufacturing. For trading, payments and lending firms, it means work like fraud scoring, KYC document checks, AML alert triage and underwriting with reason codes, all of which we have built; see fintech.

How an engagement works

01

Workflow Audit

We map your existing processes against current AI capabilities in the 90-minute AI workflow audit, identifying exactly where automation creates measurable ROI. The audit is complimentary when it is bundled with a larger build and available as a paid one-off on its own.

02

Build Sprint

A scoped build against a written scope. Prototype, staging, and deployment milestones are agreed in the written scope. Most large builds are fixed-price, with a monthly retainer after launch.

03

Launch + Support

Deployment and handover. Post-launch support and maintenance are scoped per engagement.

Common questions from Chicago businesses

Does BIPA apply to a fingerprint time clock or face login in our app?

It can. BIPA's definition of a biometric identifier includes fingerprints and scans of face geometry. Before collecting one, a business must give written notice of the purpose and retention period and get a written release. Your counsel decides; we build the notice, release, retention and deletion into the app.

Can we use AI to screen job applicants in Illinois?

You can, with care. Since 1 January 2026 the Illinois Human Rights Act prohibits AI use that has a discriminatory effect in employment decisions, prohibits zip codes as a proxy for protected classes, and requires notice to employees. On a build like that, we scope the notice, a decision record and human review in the design phase.

Can you build software for Chicago logistics and freight companies?

Yes. Reading and checking freight documents, matching carrier invoices and gathering exceptions into one queue is work we take on, around the TMS and accounting systems you already run.

Have you built software for financial firms?

Yes. We have built fraud scoring, onboarding and KYC document checks, AML alert triage, and underwriting that returns reason codes.

How do meetings work across time zones?

Chicago is one hour behind our base in Mt Pleasant, SC, so a 9am meeting in Chicago is 10am in Mt Pleasant.
