Custom Software for Boston Life Sciences and Research Teams
A Boston life sciences or health company typically has two things already written: a scientific or clinical process that cannot bend, and, under Massachusetts rules, a written information security program its vendors have to fit. We build custom software and AI that respects both, for life sciences companies, health organizations and the research groups that spin companies out of them.

Software shaped to a process the science already fixes, such as sample tracking, study operations or a data pipeline, delivered by a vendor that can sit inside the company's written security program under Massachusetts rules. Code and Trust maps that process in a 90-minute AI workflow audit, then builds against a written scope. Most large builds are fixed-price, with a monthly retainer after launch.
Life sciences and research work
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, backed by a $2.6 billion public commitment, funds programs, partnerships and investments across the state's life sciences sector. Around that sector sit companies at every stage, and the software they need from an outside team often falls into a few groups:
- →Lab and study operations. Tracking samples, schedules and approvals in one application instead of shared spreadsheets, with an audit trail of who changed what.
- →Data pipelines and reporting. Moving results from instruments, vendors and partner sites into one place, checking them, and producing the reports a team or a funder needs. Our reporting workflow page shows the pattern.
- →A first product. A founder leaving a lab with a validated idea needs an MVP that real users can try, built so it can grow. See MVP development.
- →Patient-facing tools. If a build will touch protected health information, a BAA is signed first and the system is built to HIPAA's safeguards; our healthcare page has the detail.
Fitting your written information security program
Massachusetts regulation 201 CMR 17.00 requires every person that owns or licenses personal information about a resident of the Commonwealth to develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive information security program that is written and has administrative, technical and physical safeguards. It also requires overseeing service providers, including requiring them by contract to maintain appropriate security measures, and it lists computer system requirements such as encrypting personal information stored on laptops and other portable devices.
For a software vendor, that means three practical considerations:
- →The contract. Massachusetts' regulation requires companies to put appropriate service-provider security measures in their contracts.
- →The design. On regulated builds we scope compliance and security requirements in the design phase, with your IT or security lead, so access controls, encryption and logging are part of the architecture.
- →The handover. Source code and IP transfer to you on final payment, so the system can be governed under your program after launch.
Our security page describes how we handle client systems and data. We have not completed a formal SOC 2 audit.
AI on scientific and clinical material
AI earns its place in this work on the clerical layer: reading protocols, forms and reports, pulling out fields, drafting summaries. Depending on the workflow, a person makes the final call. Every AI build starts with an evaluation set drawn from your own documents, re-run on every change, and where the AI can act, it acts from an allowlist with a person approving anything that cannot be undone.

01
Workflow Audit
We map your existing processes against current AI capabilities in the 90-minute AI workflow audit, identifying exactly where automation creates measurable ROI. The audit is complimentary when it is bundled with a larger build and available as a paid one-off on its own.
02
Build Sprint
A scoped build against a written scope. Prototype, staging, and deployment milestones are agreed in the written scope. Most large builds are fixed-price, with a monthly retainer after launch.
03
Launch + Support
Deployment and handover. Post-launch support and maintenance are scoped per engagement.
Common questions from Boston businesses
Our security team will want you inside our written information security program. Is that a problem?
On regulated builds we scope compliance and security requirements with your team during design. Massachusetts' 201 CMR 17.00 expects companies to oversee their service providers and require security measures by contract; the obligations for our work are scoped per engagement.
Are you SOC 2 certified?
No. Code and Trust has not been through a formal SOC 2 audit. What we can show is how a specific system we build for you handles access, encryption and logging.
Can you build software for a company spinning out of a lab?
Yes. An early company usually needs a first product its users can try, built so it can grow with the company. We scope that in the audit before quoting the build.
